Fredericksburg, VA - Civil War and More
We took the ten-mile trip To the north to Fredericksburg, left out the Battlefield VC, but arriving at the Fredericksburg Holding chamber of Commerce VC. Here we gained walking tour maps with the city and the invasion via pontoon bridges through the Rappahannock River from the Union forces. A portion of the buildings still remain standing and are still very functional, including the two major churches, community hall; Mary Washington's house, etc. Yes, many building were destroyed from the bombardment by both sides and the intense hand to hand combat.
Walking the streets we viewed many antique retailers, boutiques, and restaurants. The main shopping sprawl with all of the chain stores is usually on Rte 3, just away from I95. Two for the places, which truly caught our big eyes, were one, of which carved beautiful behaviours in large offspring Ostrich, etc.) and Lee's Exquisite Ice Cream Shop based using Baltimore, MD; YUM, YUM, YUM.
Most people finally found a NPS VC. They have perhaps a 22-minute dvd movie narrated by John Earl Jones in addition to a guided tour for the Sunken Road located midway the hill to Marye Heights. Brampton House, which stands along with the heights continues and is the home of the us president of Mary Buenos aires University. Sunken Road is actually restored to it's 1862 state: boulders. Four-foot high gemstone fences rise with each side to hold it from eroding. The CSA traces ran over seven miles in length. The logistics associated with moving 114, 000+ US soldiers and over 60, 000 CSA troops is pretty remarkable.
Our final give up was Chatham home built about 1770. It has your distinction of being one of the few houses where each of those George Washington as well as Abraham Lincoln stayed. Washington grew all the way up nearby and Lincoln came to visit with your partner's military officers. Within the Battle of Fredericksburg, the house was a healthcare. Clara Barton, the founder within the American Red Angry, tended to the wounded. Walt Whitman, the poet, also served, looking for his brother, who have been injured in this Battle. He were there, but on a different hospital. Whitman wrote a single of his books of the fact that amputated arms and legs of the militia were thrown towards a pile by the catalpa trees. These tress are there by the front entrance. The house on their own went into decay, but was restored inside 1920s with loving hands through the Devores.
